Representations of Germany during the Great War: Greek and international Perspectives
The period of WWI is an intriguing research field that combines various analytical perspectives. This one-day conference brings together scholars specializing in the history of ideas and the history of propaganda during WWI. It aims to analyze representations of Germany as formulated in the Greek and the European public debate and, more broadly, discuss the construction of the ‘German enemy’ in an international perspective. In Greece, the geopolitical conjuncture of the first World War and the pressures it unleashed on Greek political life intensified pre-existing political antagonisms that culminated in an acute political divide, the so-called “National Schism” (1915-1917). A core feature in this divide was perceptions about Greece’s relationship to the Great European Powers (Great Britain, France, German Empire). This theme informs the research project ‘Images of Germany in Greece during the First World War: Public Discourse, Mass Perceptions, and Propaganda, 1914-1918’ funded by the German Federal Foreign Office through the German-Greek Future Fund. Using Greece as a case study, the conference discusses the project’s research findings in the wider context of the ideas, discourses, and perceptions revolving around Germany (e.g., state formation, society, culture, military capability etc.) and its role in WWI.
